A tinsel foil fringe curtain reflected the light from neon pink and green colored cacti to illuminate 9th Street during the second Summerfest of the season on Saturday, April 30. Kacey Musgraves took the stage with band members clad in matching hot pink suits with sparkling seams and cowboy hats.
The Katy Perry reminiscent stage set couldn’t have fit better with beauty pageant theme of the country singer/songwriter’s most recent album, Pageant Material. Concert-goes of all ages packed the street to see Musgraves perform, wearing everything from cowboy boots to tiaras to shirts with the word “Biscuits” across the front. She of course played “Biscuits,” along with her other hits like “Blowin’ Smoke” and “Follow Your Arrow.” In addition to the songs off her album, I found myself singing along to her cover of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and struggling to keep up as she rattled off the names of cities in “I’ve Been Everywhere.”
The show, which had been threatened earlier in the day by weather forecasts calling for storms and heavy rain, ended with clear skies and a cool breeze as people made their way home and employees restored 9th Street back to normal, ready to be transformed again for the next Summerfest on Friday, May 20.
