Against Me! has come a long way since banging on pickle buckets. That was the case when the band was conceived, until they got a permanent drummer who, according to lead singer Laura Jane Grace, “actually had a real drum kit.”
That’s probably for the better. We’re not sure that pickle buckets would ring out too well in the upper balcony.
Of course, if you’ve even heard of Against Me!, you probably already know about Laura Jane Grace (formerly known as Tom Gabel) and her announcement in 2012 that she’s transgender. Columbia’s not exactly unwelcoming of the LGBT community, and we’re excited to announce that we’ll have Against Me! on March 10.
These days, the punk icons probably play very expensive drum sets, or at least ones with real drum skins. If they don’t, they can borrow some from their opening acts, Cheap Girls and Laura Stevenson.
For those of you who don’t know, that’s a banging support staff. Grace describes lead singer Ian Graham of Cheap Girls as “probably my most favourite song writer I’ve ever worked with. Mother fucker makes me laugh harder than anyone I know.” Laura Stevenson used to play keyboards for Bomb the Music Industry! (another band with an !), and now she’s making infectious, affectionate pop rock music.
All three bands consist of decent pretty people who know how to rock. The show should be both punk-friendly and punk friendly, so whether you like song titles like “FuckMyLife666” or “Baby Bones,” it’ll be for you.
